Introduction to Oligospermia

Oligospermia a.k.a low sperm count is a very serious health issues mostly affecting males. It is the medical condition were the semen per milliliter of a man is less than 15 million sperm.

It can be in many forms, There is;

  • Mild oligospermia which contains 10 to 15 million sperm/mL.
  • Moderate oligospermia is considered to contain up to 5 to 10 million sperm/mL.
  • Severe oligospermia is noticed when sperm counts falls between 0 and 5 million sperm/mL.

Symptoms Of Oligospermia 

Low sperm-count has a major symptom which is the inability to give birth to any child after having over a year of unprotected sex with a partner.

Honestly it is so discouraging and disheartening, it can be caused by a whole bunch of factors, but nevertheless it can be treated.


Causes Of Oligospermia

There are many Health conditions that stand a chance to cause people Oligospermia, such as:

  • Infections: STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections), Mumps and UTIs (Urinary Tract Infections) reduce the sperm amount in semen.
  • Genetics Conditions: Klinefelter syndrome and cystic fibrosis reduce the sperm amount in semen.
  • Hormones’ Problems: The inability of the brain and Testicles to produce enough sex hormones. An imbalance in any of these hormones may lower sperm count numbers.
  • Sperm flow can also be  stopped by blockages.

Environmental Toxins and Chemicals:

Environmental toxins, including pesticides, heavy metals, and industrial chemicals, have been shown to affect sperm production negatively, leading to oligospermia . These substances can interfere with hormonal regulation, harm testicular tissue, and reduce sperm quality, contributing to male infertility.

Heat and varicocele:

Okay you are meant to know that the testicles normally function at a temperature below the original heat of the body. Any slight increase in the temperature of the testicle can temporary reduce sperm production. other related situations are:

  • Varicocele: Having enlarged and twisted veins in your  scrotum can alter the blood flow to the testicles. causing the temperature in the testicles to increase. and increase in heat can reduce sperm production.
  • Always sitting down, placing of laptops over your genitals, staying long in hot bathes can all cause negative impact in the production of sperms.

Drugs and Medications:

Different times of drugs both those that were prescribed and those that you bought by your self can all cause low sperm-count. Making use of hard drugs such as marijuana, cocaine and many more, taking alcohol, smoking, using drugs like antibiotics, beta blockers all have effect on the sperm count of an individual. Some of these medications include;

  • Anabolic steroids
  • Chemotherapy drugs
  • Radiation therapy
  • Opioids (e.g., morphine, heroin, oxycodone)
  • Cimetidine
  • Spironolactone
  • Finasteride
  • Sulfasalazine

Treatment of Oligospermia

There are many known treatments for Oligospermia depending on the nature and cause of your low sperm-counts. For your information Some men with oligospermia can still conceive despite lower sperm counts but it is very rare and hard. The Treatments involve;

  • Stopping or reducing the consumption of medicine and edibles that affect sperm counting.
  • Surgery for the treatment of varicocele or blocked sperm ducts.
  • Prescription hormone supplements to increase the creation of needed hormones.
  • Lifestyle changes: Maintaining a healthy weight can improve sperm count numbers, It may also aid in the reduction of risk in many other health conditions.
  • Medication: including antibiotics, treat infections and inflammation. Treatment may not improve sperm numbers, but it may prevent greater sperm count drops.
